Another amazing place near   Commerce Township is the historical Byers Homestead. If you want to take a quick ride with your family on a weekend afternoon, this is the place. You can feed the ducks and have a long peaceful walk around the grounds. Pick some antiques from the store. The Byers Homestead also holds many events during Christmas and Halloween.

One of the most interesting places in Commerce Township is the Detroit Gun Club. If you enjoy competitive shooting, this place should be at the top of your list. Walled Lake Consolidated Schools is a famous school in Commerce. The U.S. Department of Education designated it as a National Exemplary School. Walled Lake Central was recently listed among the top 5% of schools in the country. Students from the northern half of  Commerce Township go to Huron Valley Schools. In total, there are 3 High Schools and 5 Middle Schools with 13 Elementary Schools.


What are some historical facts around Commerce Township?

In 1825, a German immigrant established Commerce. He is also known for building a log cabin nearby the Huron River. However, the log cabin was replaced by a farmhouse in 1840 and became  Byers Homestead, the historical site we discussed above that’s enjoyed by so many.

For most of its history, Commerce has been the getaway place for those seeking a break from the everyday. The region was within reach of Detroit and had only a few farms dotted throughout it.. As it was so sparsely populated, the area became a place that was cherished by hunters and boaters. Its small inland lakes offered a chance to escape the city. Hidden in the wooded areas, quiet cottages promise a peaceful time.

New developments in the area have happened very recently. Homes in the north part of Commerce have been built. Their structures are built in a similar style as that of cabins and cottages. Many professional services have moved in to serve the increasing population. Shopping centers and more high schools have also opened to serve the people.

Neighboring towns include  Waterford, Northville, Holly, and Clarkston. You can also find Keego Harbor, Brighton, and Howell. Commerce is close to Hartland, Green Oak Township, and South Lyon. Farmington Hills, Livonia, Oakland County, and Livingston County are a few others.

In the township, there are also some unincorporated communities. One of them is Union Lake. The Union Lake community borders the northeastern part of the township. It shares borders with the townships of White Lake, Waterford, and West Bloomfield. Another community is Oakley Park. It is home to the highly-rated public school, Oakley Park Elementary School.
