City Spotlight: Clarkston

Though only one-half mile in size, the Village of Clarkston is big on fun while maintaining its small-town quaintness.

Clarkston may be best known for its outdoor concert venue, DTE Energy Theater, but it’s thriving downtown is a popular destination for county residents. With multiple dining establishments featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and acclaimed by USA Today, it’s no surprise that Metro Detroiters flock to the two and a half block downtown for a quick (or leisurely) bite to eat.

Clarkston Union is arguably the city’s best-known dining destination and features top-notch American comfort food, with the crown jewel being their mac n cheese.  Housed in a renovated 1840’s church, you can enjoy cheesy noodles and more in a cozy atmosphere of oak pews and stained glass.

Another Clarkston institution is right down the street: Union Woodshop is a rustic BBQ joint that serves up house-smoked meats and wood-fired pizzas. If you’re looking for a swankier date night destination, check out The Fed, a renovated bank with seriously cool, Instagram-worthy decor and a dining room in the vault.

If you’re not too full, it’s worth taking a stroll and shopping the downtown boutiques. Stop by the Gateway, a creative florist with unique gifts; Essence on Main for gourmet groceries and goodies; or Union General, a hometown favorite general store that serves up coffee, ice cream, and sweets.

If you’ve walked all that downtown offers, then it’s time to step off the beaten path and visit Depot Park--a community park right off Main Street. With undulating grounds, open spaces, and a children’s playground, this is a perfect place to unplug with the family. In the summer, the park is host to a series of free Concerts, Art in the Village, antique and unique car shows, and more. The park also offers a small creek, picturesque bridges, and a romantic gazebo making this a great place to retire after a date night.
